VPS QUICK START GUIDE

WELCOME

We have prepared this document, in order to assist you in setting up your VPS hassle free. Apart from this, you can either refer to our knowledge base Or contact us via 24 X 7 live chat support for any specific query you may have with regard to initial setting up your VPS. As you may be knowing, that setting up and managing a VPS is not a simple job. Either the owner of the VPS should have thorough technical knowledge or he should someone with him to take care of technical issues of his VPS. If you have chosen to avail our managed services, then our technical team will troubleshoot any technical issue that may arise. However, if you have chosen to go for self-managed VPS services, then you will have to manage all technical issues of your VPS.

In order to manage your VPS, you will have WebsitePanel with you. All the login credentials, server details, etc will be sent to immediately your account is active via a separate Welcome email.

Since our VPS services are self-managed, you will receive very limited technical support, except in initial configuration of your VPS.

(1) Log in to VPS Management Area: 

It is to use to monitor and manage the allocated resource to your VPS. For example you can manage CPU, Memory, Disk Space and IP Address from here/ Apart from that, you can also perform following tasks from this area:

  1. Reboot your VPS.

  2. Pause your VPS.

  3. Check the configuration of your VPS.

  4. Check the audit logs of your VPS.

In addition to this you can also check the resources of your VPS by login to your VPS via RDP:

1.) You can check the RAM & CPU Processor here:

2) From below screen you can verify the CPU Cores allocated to your VPS.

Windows OS:

If you have Windows XP, VISTA or Windows 7 on your home computer, it is very easy to connect to your VPS at work.

  1. Click on the Start button, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click on Remote Desktop Connection.

  2. In Computer window, type the IP address of your VPS in computer name.

  3. Click Connect.

  4. The Log on to Windows dialog box appears. Type in your VPS RDP user name, password.

OR you may also follow below steps:

  1. Click on the Start button.

  2. Click on Run.

  3. Type “mstsc” command without any quotes.

  4. Press Enter.

  5. In Computer window, type the IP address of your VPS in computer name.

  6. Click Connect.

  7. The Log on to Windows dialog box appears. Type in your VPS RDP user name, password.

Linux OS:

You can use open source client rDesktop for Linux in order to connect to your VPS from any Linux distribution. You can download rDesktop client from below URL:

MAC OS:

RDP Client for Mac allows you to connect to a Windows-based computer and work with programs and files on that computer from your Macintosh computer. You can download it from below URL:

(3) DNS (Name Servers) Management:

For example, if you wish to set ns1.xyz.com and ns2.xyz.com as nameservers for your VPS then below are the steps:

(3.1) Registering the Nameserver with your Registrar:

The important part is to register the created nameservers from the domain name registrar end. You need to go in to the domain control panel of your domain registrar where your domain xyz.com is registered and register the created ns1.xyz.com, ns2.xyz.com as child nameservers.

(3.2) Registering the nameservers using WebsitePanel in your VPS:

If you have provided the nameservers information at the time of sign up as ns1.abc.com and ns2.abc.com then you do not need to follow the below mentioned steps:

  1. Login to your WebsitePanel.

  2. Go to Configuration → Servers.

  3. Click on your server name.

  4. Click on “DNS”.

  5. Under “Name Servers:”, enter your primary and secondary nameservers and click on “Update” button.

- Create required A records for nameserves:

If you have set ns1.xyz.com and ns2.xyz.com as nameservers from WebsitePanel, you will need to create ns1 and ns2 'A' records from the DNS zone of xyz.com domain. Following are the steps to create 'A' records:

  1. Create the domain xyz.com from WebSitePanel.

  2. Go to Domains → xyz.com.

  3. Click on Edit DNS zone records.

  4. Add A records for ns1 and ns2 and point them to the IP address of your VPS.

  5. Click on Update button to save the changes.

(3.3) Registering the nameservers Without WebSitePanel in your VPS:

Creating Your DNS Server: 

Using the information above, configure your Microsoft DNS server by doing the following:

  1. Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click DNS Manager.

  2. From the DNS menu, click New Server.

  3. Type the IP address of your VPS in the Add DNS Server dialog box (192.168.58.15 in the example information), and then click OK.

NOTE: It is not necessary to restart the DNS server for changes to your zones to take effect. All that is required is for the server data files to be updated using the following step:

Creating Your Forward Lookup Zone:

  1. In DNS Manager, right-click your server, and then click New Zone.

  2. Click Primary Zone, and then click Next.

  3. Type the Zone Name for your DNS domain. This is the domain name that is registered with Internic (<xyz.com> in the example).

  4. Press Tab, click Next, and then click Finish.

Adding Host Records to Your Forward Lookup Zone:

  1. Right-click your forward zone, <xyz.com>, and then click New Host.

2. Type the host name of your DNS server and the IP address. In this example, “ns1” will be the hostname and your VPS IP address will be the IP address. Make sure you select A record from the record type.

3. Click Done.

Note: Repeat 1 to 3 steps to create a second nameserver record ns2.

Once you register the child nameservers (private nameservers), you can go ahead and use the created nameservers for any domains you host on your VPS.

Note: Nameservers may take 24 to 48 hours to propagate across the globe.

(3.4) Setup rDNS for your IP address:

If you want to set rDNS for your IP address, kindly submit a ticket from your billing account. You will have to provide the following information in the ticket:

IP address

Hostname

Hostname should resolve to your IP address.

(4) Domain and Website Management: 

(4.1) Manage your domain and website using WebsitePanel:

In order to do so we provide you with a Website Control Panel using (WebsitePanel) which you can manage both your Domain and the website. Here is the link providing you detailed steps to do so:

(4.2) Manage your domain and website without WebsitePanel:

(5) FTP Management: 

(5.1) Manage your FTP account using WebsitePanel:

(6) Email Management: 

In order to create email accounts you will need to select the SMARTER TOOLS option while signing up the VPS. You can manage all your accounts using the guidelines provided in the below mentioned link:

(6.1) SmarterMail Configuration:

If you have selected the Smartermail option during signup, Smartermail Professional 7 will be installed and configured on your VPS. By default Smartermail will be configured at port address 9998. You can connect with smartermail using your VPS IP address:9998.

If you like to connect with smartermail using mail.domain.tld then you will have to purchase additional IP address when placing the order so that we can install and configure the smartermail on additional IP address.

(6.2) SmarterStats:

If you would like to have an SmarterStats in your VPS then you will have to add a special comment in the comment box during the sign up process and we will install it and configure it in your VPS. By default Smarterstats will be configure at port address 9999. You can connect with Smarerstats using your VPS IP address:9999.

(6.3) SmarterTrack:

If you would like to have an SmarterTrack in your VPS then you will have to add a special comment in the comment box during the sign up process and we will install it and configure it in your VPS. By default SmarterTrack will be configure at port address 9996. You can connect with the Smartertrack using your VPS IP address:9996.

(7) Database Management :

(7.1) MSSQL Management:

In order to manage MSSQL database you will have to create a database through websitepanel. You can get the steps to create the database from the below mentioned URL:

Once you create the database you can manage it through SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2 from your VPS server.

(7.2) Access your MSSQL server remotely:

If you have selected “SQL server” option during sign-up, SQL 2008 R2 Express edition will be installed and configured on your VPS. You can connect to your SQL server remotely using SQL Management studio. You will have to use <Your_VPS_IP>,1533 as a server name in your SQL management studio. SQL server will be configured on port 1533 by default. If you want to change the port, you can submit a ticket from your billing account. You will need to supply following information in your SQL Management studio to connect to your server remotely:

(7.3) MySQL Management:

In order to manage MySQL database you will have to create a database through websitepanel. You can get the steps to create the MySQL database from the below mentioned URL:

Once you create the database you can manage your database through PHPMyAdmin which install in your VPS server. You can access PHPMyAdmin using your VPS IP address:8080.

(8) Network Wide Port Blocks

We block the inbound traffic on the following ports network wide:

- 135 - 139 (NetBIOS)
- 445 (NetBIOS)
- 497 (Backup Software)
- 389 (LDAP)
- 68 (DHCP)
- 1433 - 1434 (SQL Server)
- 1025 (MS Scheduled Task Endpoint)

If you need to make use of the above ports, please open a ticket and we will be able to allow the traffic you require. In your ticket, please mention the following details:

- IP address
- The ports you want open
- The IP addresses you want to be able to access these ports

(9) Add-on Software/Application Requirement:

If you want a special installation like:

- MS SQL 2008R2 Express edition with Advance services like Reporting service

- FrontPage Extension Service requirement with Windows 2003 server.

In such cases, there will a special comment box during the sign up process; you need to mention your special requirement over there. Hence, we can take care of such requirement during the VPS configuration.

(9.1) Web Platform Installer:

The Microsoft Web Platform Installer 2.0 (Web PI) is a free tool that makes getting the latest components of the Microsoft Web Platform, including Internet Information Services (IIS), SQL Server Express, .NET Framework and Visual Web Developer easy. The Web PI also makes it easy to install and run the most popular free web applications for blogging, content management and more with the built-in Windows Web Application Gallery.

Note: If you already choosen WebSitePanel then you do not need to use Web Platform Installer to install PHP, ASP.NET, MS SQL and all the prerequistics. You will already get such features installed with your VPS.
